On Tuesday I drove to Comanche, Tx to do a short demo for their monthly meeting.
Luckily, I had prepared well ahead of time and made sure to have most of the work done, first by finishing a painting and second by mounting the finished painting, the photo, and a already started painting, on black foam core. I decided to demonstrate the method I have just started using, which is a watercolor underpainting before using my pastels. I had played around with this method many years ago, but could never quite find a paper I liked. A couple of years ago, I started using Pastelmat paper. I love that it can handle the water colors and still maintains a nice tooth. The great thing is it feels smooth. I have never been a big fan of sanded paper except for Kitty Wallis. I haven't tried it yet, but I hear you can even run water over this paper to get rid of something you aren't happy with. It holds up so well, I am just amazed. I took my favorite pastels, Unison, Terry Ludwig, and Townsend along with me to work with. Luckily, having already produced one painting from this photograph, I could narrow down the amount of pastels I took with me.
The Comanche group were a lively and inquisitive bunch and asked lots of questions and came up to ask even more once the demo was over. Unfortunately I had to run before the business meeting, my husband was home taking care of his 96 yr old mother alone. So, as he doesn't even boil water, I still had to get them something to eat. I stopped along the way and picked up burgers. Not very healthy but tasty..
I had to do a round of steroids a couple of weeks ago, I had not been able to get out of bed for a week, so I have been feeling a little better. Of course, we are now experiencing a weather change, its Texas so the weather changes a lot! I'm still not as bad as I was a few weeks ago, so I am trying to do some sketching and catching up on videos.
I hope all of you are doing well and painting as much as you can. Be easy on yourselves, it will still be there when you are feeling better. Have a good day!
